Anyone who moves into accommodation in Germany must register the address with the local registration office under the Federal Registration Act. The responsible office, appointment system, forms and language depend on the municipality, so the local authority's page is the authority, not a general checklist.

Which office and when

Where: the Einwohnermeldeamt / Bürgeramt responsible for the new address. Larger cities use an online appointment system; smaller municipalities use phone or walk-in hours.
When: within the period stated by the municipality, commonly 14 days after moving in. Deadlines can be strict where the office is busy — book the slot before you move if appointments are released early.

What the landlord must provide

The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — a signed confirmation from the landlord or provider that you moved in — is required. A rental contract alone is not sufficient. If you sublet, the main tenant plus the landlord may need to sign depending on local rules. Ask for this document the day you receive the keys.

Documents to bring

Passport or national identity card (and visa/residence document where applicable)
Completed local registration form if the municipality requires one (many publish a PDF in German)
Signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung with move-in date, address, landlord name and signature
Documents for family members where the municipality lists them

Check the registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) before leaving the counter: spelling of names, address, and move-in date are reused for tax ID, bank, and other registrations. Correct errors at the desk.

What Anmeldung does and does not do

Registration creates a record of residence for administration; it does not itself grant a residence permit, tax status, or entitlement to benefits. Separate steps — residence, tax ID, health insurance, broadcast contribution — follow and each has its own office.

Common mistakes

Using a rental contract instead of the required landlord confirmation.
Registering an address where you do not actually live (including a friend's address) — this can cause later deregistration problems.
Waiting until the deadline week when appointments are fully booked for the next month.
Assuming Anmeldung automatically triggers a tax-ID letter in English or confirms immigration status.

Tips

Book the Bürgeramt appointment the day your move date is fixed, even if the confirmation will arrive later.
Bring a German-speaking friend or translator if the office does not offer English service.
Keep the Meldebescheinigung; you will need the original for many follow-up registrations.
