Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit number that links all your EPF accounts across different employers. Losing it is common - you may have changed jobs, forgotten details, or never noted it down. Fortunately, recovery is straightforward through several official methods.

What is the UAN?

The UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every employee contributing to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF). It stays the same even when you change jobs, making it essential for accessing your EPF balance, transfers, and withdrawals through the EPFO unified portal.

Method 1: Recover UAN via the UAN Member Portal

This is the fastest official method.

Go to the UAN member portal: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Click "Forgot UAN" / "Know your UAN"
Enter your registered mobile number (the one linked to your EPF)
Complete the OTP verification sent to your mobile
Your UAN will be displayed or sent to your registered mobile/email

Note: This works only if your mobile number is registered with EPFO. If not, use Method 2 or 3.

Method 2: Recover via the UMANG App

Download the UMANG app (official Government of India app)
Select the EPFO service
Use the "Know your UAN" option
Verify via OTP on your registered mobile

UMANG consolidates many government services; the EPFO section includes UAN recovery, balance check, and passbook.

Method 3: Ask Your Employer

If your mobile number is not registered, contact your current (or previous) employer's HR or payroll department. They have access to your UAN in their EPFO employer records and can provide it to you.

Method 4: If You Do Not Have a Registered Mobile

If you never registered a mobile number with EPFO, you must get your employer to update your KYC and mobile number through the employer portal, or approach the EPFO regional office with your identity documents.

What to Do After Recovering Your UAN

Register on the UAN member portal using your UAN, mobile number, and a password
Set up KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, bank account) so future processes are smooth
Check your passbook to confirm all your EPF contributions are visible
Link multiple accounts if you have changed jobs
Update your mobile number if you change it, to avoid losing access again

Common Errors and Troubleshooting

"Mobile number not registered" error: Use Method 3 (employer) or update via employer.
OTP not received: Check your network, ensure the number is the registered one, and try again after a few minutes.
"UAN not found" error: Confirm you have an active EPF account; if you were employed before 2014 without UAN activation, contact EPFO.
Forgot password: Use the "Forgot Password" option on the portal.
