India DigiLocker Complete Guide: Verify and Share Documents Safely

DigiLocker is the Government of India's digital document wallet launched under the Digital India initiative. It provides a cloud-based platform for citizens to store, access, and share digital versions of important documents issued by government authorities, educational institutions, and other registered issuers.

DigiLocker eliminates the need to carry physical documents and provides a government-verified way to access documents from anywhere. Documents stored in DigiLocker are legally valid and accepted by government agencies, educational institutions, banks, and other organizations across India.

Types of Documents Available

DigiLocker offers two types of documents:

Issued Documents: These are official documents issued by government agencies directly to your DigiLocker account. These include:

• CBSE/ICSE/State Board mark sheets and certificatesDriving license (from Transport Department)Vehicle registration certificate (from Transport Department)PAN card (from Income Tax Department)Aadhaar card (from UIDAI)Passport (from Ministry of External Affairs)Educational certificates from universities and boards

Uploaded Documents: These are documents you upload yourself in PDF format. You can upload:

• Personal documents (rental agreements, insurance policies)Scanned copies of physical certificatesAny other important documents

Account Setup Process

1. Visit digilocker.gov.in or download the mobile app

2. Click "Sign Up" and enter your Aadhaar number

3. Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number

4. Set your username and password

5. Complete registration and access your DigiLocker dashboard

You can also sign up using your mobile number if you don't have Aadhaar, but the Aadhaar-linked account provides access to more documents and features.

Fetching CBSE and Educational Certificates

To fetch your CBSE certificates:

1. Log in to DigiLocker

2. Go to "Partner" section → select "Central Board of Secondary Education"

3. Enter your roll number, year of examination, and school code

4. Your mark sheets and certificates will be automatically fetched

5. Download or share as needed

Similarly, you can fetch certificates from ICSE, various state boards, and universities that are partnered with DigiLocker.

Document URI and Sharing

Every document in DigiLocker has a unique URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) that can be used for verification. When sharing documents, you can:

• Share via email (document sent as PDF attachment)Share via download link (valid for a set period)Share the document URI for third-party verification

Organizations can verify your documents by entering the URI on the DigiLocker verification portal. The verification shows whether the document is authentic and has not been tampered with.
