GRE Quant Mastery: Advanced Strategies for 165+ on the Shorter GRE

GRE Quant at 165+ isn't about knowing more math — it's about answering 27 adaptive questions with near-zero errors, under calculator constraints, with QC logic.

This assumes ETS Math Review Level 3 mastery. If not, stop and review Chapters 1-4 first.

What 165+ requires:

• Section 1 (12q, ~21m): 10-11 correct → unlocks Hard Section 2
• Hard Section 2 (15q, ~26m): 13-14 correct → 165-170
• Total misses allowed: 2-4 across 27 questions
• QC mastery: 6-8 per test, each tests logic not computation
• Calculator: Use 20-30% of questions only

1. Quantitative Comparison (QC) — 7-9 per test, 1:30 avg

Format: Quantity A vs Quantity B. Choices always: A (A>B), B (B>A), C (Equal), D (Cannot Determine)

QC-Specific Strategies:

Systematic QC Protocol (45 sec):

1. Simplify both sides (15 sec)
2. If variables: Plug 0, 1, -1, fraction, large number (20 sec)
3. Different results → D. Same → that relationship (A/B/C) (10 sec)

Common QC Traps:

• Domain hidden: "x is an integer" → don't test fractions
• Square root: √x² = |x|, not x
• Exponent with negative base: (-2)²=4, (-2)³=-8 — sign matters
• Percent: 30% of x vs x% of 30 → same (0.3x vs 0.01x·30)

2. Multiple Choice (1 answer) — 7-9 per test

Standard 5-option. Backsolving available for some: Plug answer choices into equation.

When to backsolve: Word problems with integer answers, "what is the value of x?" — start with middle choice (C).

3. Multiple Choice (1+ answers) — 2-3 per test

"Select all that apply." No partial credit. Must get ALL correct, NO incorrect.

Strategy: Find range. For "which values satisfy...?" — test each choice independently.

4. Numeric Entry — 2-3 per test

Enter integer/decimal/fraction. Calculator Transfer button saves time.

Format rules:

• Integer: 7
• Decimal: 7.5 or 7.50
• Fraction: 15/2 (not mixed number)
• No rounding unless specified

Algebra Hard Pattern: "Parameter For All Values"

For what value of k does 2x + ky = 5 and 4x + 6y = 10 have infinite solutions?
→ Proportional coefficients: 2/4 = k/6 = 5/10 → k=3

Data Analysis Hard Pattern: "SD Without Calculating"

Data set A: mean 50, SD 2. Data set B: same mean, values more spread → B has larger SD.
→ No calculation. Spread → SD.

On-screen calculator (basic 4-function + sqrt + memory):

Use calculator for:

• √341 ≈ 18.466
• 17.5% of 342.8
• Checking 247 × 18
• Multi-step with decimals

Do NOT use for:

• 1/2 + 1/3 (mental: 5/6)
• QC simplification (algebraic)
• Estimation: "Approximately" → round
• Comparing A vs B when algebra suffices

Speed benchmark: 10 calculations in 2 min (mixed). Practice in POWERPREP.

Format: Graphs/tables + 2-3 questions. Must extract correctly.

Protocol (per DI set):

3. Legend (5 sec)
4. Notable values (10 sec)
5. Answer questions (40 sec/q)

Common DI traps: Unit mismatch (mm vs cm), log scale, percent of percent.
