ACT Score Interpretation 2024-2025: From Composite to Admissions Strategy

Your ACT scores are available. Now what?

The score report shows: Composite 1-36, four section scores 1-36, percentiles, STEM/ELA indicators, and (if paper/TIR) detailed question-level data. But the report doesn't tell you: Is this good enough? Should I retake? Which colleges see what? How do I maximize this score?

This guide translates your numbers into admissions strategy.

The Numbers That Matter

Percentiles: Two Types, Different Uses

1. US Rank (Nationally Representative):

• Compares you to all US 11th-12th graders (including non-test-takers)
• Higher numbers (e.g., 24 = ~75th percentile nationally)
• Use for: General context, some scholarship thresholds

2. ACT User Percentile (College-Bound):

• Compares you to actual ACT test-takers in graduating classes 2022-2024
• Lower numbers (e.g., 24 = ~65th percentile users)
• Use for: College admissions competitiveness — this is what colleges see

Key 2024 User Percentiles (Approximate):

Section Percentiles (User, Approximate):

• 36 English = 99th | 36 Math = 99th | 36 Reading = 99th | 36 Science = 99th
• 30 English = 91st | 30 Math = 94th | 30 Reading = 88th | 30 Science = 88th
• 24 English = 71st | 24 Math = 77th | 24 Reading = 69th | 24 Science = 70th

Note: Math and Science percentiles run slightly higher — more students score high on STEM sections.

STEM & ELA Indicators: Diagnostic Only

• STEM: (Math + Science) / 2 rounded. Indicates quantitative readiness.ELA: (English + Reading + Writing) / 3 rounded. Indicates literacy readiness.Colleges do not officially use these — they're for your course placement/major fit context.

There is no universal "good" score. There is only "competitive for your target colleges."

The Middle 50% Rule

How to use it:

1. List 8-12 target colleges (Reach, Match, Safety)
2. Find each college's CDS (Common Data Set) — search "[College Name] Common Data Set ACT"
3. Extract the middle 50% range for Composite and sections
4. Your goal: Be at or above the 75th percentile for Matches/Safeties; at or above median for Reaches

Example College Tiers (2024-2025 CDS Data — Approximate)

Always verify current year CDS — ranges shift annually.

Superscoring = College takes your highest English + highest Math + highest Reading + highest Science across all sittings → recalculates Composite.

How It Works

• You take ACT 3 times:Test 1: E 30, M 28, R 32, S 29 → Composite 30Test 2: E 32, M 27, R 31, S 30 → Composite 30Test 3: E 31, M 30, R 33, S 28 → Composite 31Superscore: E 32 + M 30 + R 33 + S 30 = 125 / 4 = 31.25 → 31(Higher than any single sitting's 30)

Superscoring Policies by College Type

Critical: Check each college's website for "standardized testing policy" or "ACT superscore." Policies change annually.

Superscoring Across Paper/Digital Formats

Score Choice = You select which test dates to send. Colleges only see those dates.

The Retake ROI Calculation

Key insight: Section-specific prep (e.g., only Science) often yields +3-4 points on that section → +1 Composite. Efficient.

Percentile Context
